Former Blackburn striker DJ Campbell considered quitting football following his arrest last year in connection with a match-fixing investigation.

Campbell was one of six people questioned over the allegations in December but last month the 32-year-old was told he would not face any changes.

"I came very close," Campbell admitted. "I spoke to (Blackburn) manager Gary Bowyer at one stage on the phone and said I was thinking about that and he said 'no, you’re a good player.'

"It has been a very frustrating situation and it was very difficult with what they were trying to accuse me of doing. I was basically trying to clear my name.

"I’ve done nothing wrong and I’ve said that from the start. It’s been very tough for me and my family, I tried to carry on playing football and I have to say Blackburn were tremendous towards the situation and the gaffer Gary was superb and understanding.

"Now I just want to get back to playing football I’ve been training hard on my own so hopefully, with this is all behind me now, I can move forward."

Campbell, who had a loan spell at Millwall in the second half last season, left Rovers in July by mutual consent.
