Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer has blasted his side's defending in their shock Capital One Cup defeat to Shrewsbury on Tuesday night.

Rovers were knocked out of the first round of the competition for the third consecutive time to League One opposition, going down 2-1 at home.

The visitors were 1-0 up inside nine minutes after a poor back pass from debutant Ryan Nyambe.

An own goal from Shrewsbury’s Liam Lawrence brought the game level, but Tyrone Barnett won it for the League One side when he drilled in from 20 yards.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Bowyer said: “We have to stop conceding silly goals, soft goals. And that’s what they were.”

Bowyer made nine changes to the side that were beaten 2-1 to Wolverhampton in their opening Championship game.

“It was naive from us and when you look at the names on the team-sheet, we shouldn’t have been naïve,” he said.

Rovers were booed off at the half-time and full-time whistles.

“We can totally understand the frustration of the fans because they know what a cup run is like having been to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season, and taking Liverpool to a replay and beating Premiership teams here,” he said.
