Keeper disappointed not to win Carling Cup final

Brad Friedel hopes to return to Wembley in the FA Cup final after Aston Villa lost 2-1 to Manchester United in the Carling Cup final. Villa had taken an early lead through James Milner's penalty, but United hit back through Michael Owen's crisp finish before Wayne Rooney headed a second-half winner. Owen equalised after the normally unflappable Richard Dunne had been robbed of possession by Dimitar Berbatov, while Villa were also aggrieved that Nemanja Vidic was not sent off for bringing down Gabriel Agbonlahor for the penalty. Veteran keeper Friedel offered his support to defender Dunne and also felt a dismissal for Vidic could have kept the game in Villa's favour. However, with the club also in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, Friedel is hoping to enjoy another date at Wembley in May.

Unfortunate

"We had chances and were very unfortunate with the possible sending-off early on in the game," the American told Sky Sports. "I think that first goal was fortunate, it was just a slip from Dunney and he will always be one of the best centre-halves around. "The way we started the first 25, 30 minutes we'll be disappointed we didn't win, but we gave it our all today. "We've had a good run and we hope to be back here in the FA Cup." Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov praised the club's fans for their support during the game and also hopes to reward them with another final appearance. The midfielder said: "They've been incredible. I hope they keep supporting us and we'll try to make another final."
