Ian Holloway couldn't help but poke fun at former England manager Steve McClaren and his umbrella as the sprinklers turned on at Craven Cottage.

Ian Holloway couldn't help but poke fun at former England manager Steve McClaren and his famed umbrella as sprinklers at Craven Cottage threatened to soak the pair of them.

The former Newcastle manager joined Sky Sports pundits Holloway and Peter Beagrie as Fulham and Newcastle kicked-off the Sky Bet Championship season on Friday.

Having contributed to the Magpies' plight last season, McClaren was on hand to reflect on his tenure before new boss Rafa Benitez set about steering the club back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Yet, despite this, Holloway was on hand to remind McClaren of another of his managerial ventures that didn't go exactly to plan - his short stint in charge of England.

McClaren's international management career came to an abrupt end on a rain-soaked night at Wembley in 2007 when the Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

With an umbrella in hand, McClaren stood helpless on touchline as Croatia qualified at their expense, earning him the nickname 'the wally with the brolly'.
