Ferguson keen to return after 'nightmare' summer

Newcastle United youngster Shane Ferguson is desperate to make his first-team comeback after what he describes as a 'nightmare' summer. The 20-year-old injured an ankle in the Magpies' first pre-season match of the summer at Darlington and was forced to sit out the remainder of their friendly fixtures. The Northern Ireland international also hadn't recovered in time to feature in either of the North East club's opening Premier League matches. However, Ferguson came through a reserve game unscathed last week and the Derry-born defender hopes to earn a recall for the Toon's Carling Cup second round clash with Scunthorpe at Glanford Park on Thursday.

Timing

"It was a nightmare summer," Ferguson told the club's official website. "I missed all of pre-season and it [the injury] came at the worst time ever - a day before the tour of America. "So it was bad timing, but it's just one of those things, a bit of bad luck, and hopefully I can push on now. "If I do get my chance soon it would be brilliant. When I started pre-season I had a chance there, but now I will have to work hard to get in, especially with the way the team have started. "But hopefully it will be sooner rather than later."
