Moussa Sissoko is determined to help Newcastle end a run of four straight Wear-Tyne derby defeats when they travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland.

Adam Johnson’s last-gasp strike just before Christmas handed Newcastle their fourth straight derby defeat and you have to go back to August 2011 to see John Carver’s side’s last victory over Sunderland.

However, Sissoko, speaking exclusively to Sky Sports ahead of the Wear-Tyne derby, was in confident mood ahead of the trip to the Stadium of Light, claiming his side is ready to get back to winning ways against their rivals.

“Everybody knows that this game is going to be very important,” Sissoko said.

“We lost the last game against Arsenal but we played very well. On Sunday it’s a different game and everybody wants to win this game because it’s a derby and we’ve lost the last four derbies.

“Everybody is ready to go to Sunderland and get the three points.”

Newcastle produced an excellent second-half performance in their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last time out and were very unlucky not to snatch a point.

But Sissoko is not worried about his side’s performance as long as they make the short trip back to St James’ Park with all three points.

“The derby is a different game,” he added. “You just want to win. If you play well it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to win but we didn’t. In the last game at home I think we played very well but we conceded the goal right at the end of the game to lose 1-0.

“Sunday is another game and we have to show good character and motivation and go there to win.

“We have to be more concentrated and do our best to try and win the game. We have to stop them and win the game. That is the most important.”

Since arriving at Newcastle from Toulouse in 2013 Sissoko has been a key part in in vicyories over the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

However, he is yet to taste victory over Sunderland and that is something he is hoping to change when the two sides meet on Wearside.

“It’s fantastic when you beat the big teams like Chelsea or Manchester City or someone like that,” he added.

“I think for the fans the most important is the derby and for me as well so I hope we’re going to see a good victory for Newcastle.

“It’s important we show good character and good mentality and go out on the pitch to try and do the best to win the game. When you are a player you want to win every game, especially a derby.”
