Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is optimistic Michael Johnson will not require surgery on his groin injury.
Johnson has not played for City since the Carling Cup defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in late September due to the nagging problem.
Reports over the weekend suggested the promising midfielder will need an operation before he is ready to return to the City side.
However, Hughes confirmed the club are still exploring ways to remedy the problem without the need for surgery.
"He's still with the medical team here and we are still trying to work on the right course of action for him," Hughes told the club's
official website.
"We're not at the stage, yet, where we think an operation is needed, but we want to resolve it as quickly as possible, but at the moment we don't think it's coming to that."

Meanwhile, Hughes is hopeful that Vincent Kompany will be fit to return to the City side for Sunday's Premier League trip to Hull City.
Kompany missed the weekend's 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur due to suspension, but would have struggled to make the game due to a groin injury.
Hughes added: "We'll check Vincent again today, but we still have a few days and we don't have to quickly get him out onto the field of play to see if he is OK.
"Hopefully this slight groin injury will resolve itself over the next couple of days, but we're positive on that.
"He had to miss the weekend, but in hindsight that was good for the injury, although not so good for us because we did miss him. However we feel that it's likely that Vincent will be available for Hull."
