McGivern & Wright-Phillips get City off to winning start
Manchester City kicked off their pre-season tour of North America with a 2-0 victory over Mexican side Club America.
Academy product Ryan McGivern opened the scoring, before Shaun Wright-Phillips shot a reminder of his worth, in front of 11,250 fans at AT&T Park.
Summer signings Stefan Savic and Gael Clichy were handed debuts along with Swiss youngster Freddie Veseli in an unfamiliar starting line-up but it was McGivern who stole the spotlight with a curled finish on 17 minutes.
City had a second 10 minutes later when Wright-Phillips fired home from the edge of the box into the bottom-right corner.
Only Vladimir Weiss kept his place after the interval as City boss Roberto Mancini shuffled his pack and John Guidetti was unlucky not to make a goalscoring impact, striking a post at the death.
City continue their preparations for the new campaign with a game against Vancouver Whitecaps on Monday.
