Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho says it is a dream to be representing Brazil at the World Cup on the back of a positive year domestically.

Having signed from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer for a reported fee of £30million, the 29-year-old enjoyed a fine debut season in England as he helped City to the Premier League title and Capital One Cup glory.

Fernandinho’s displays earned him a recall to the national side and he has forced his way into Luiz Felipe Scolari’s 23-man squad for the World Cup, something which he hoped his move would help him to achieve.

Brazil take on Croatia in the tournament’s opening game and Fernandinho admits that he feels privileged to be a part of history on home soil.

"It’s very exciting. To play a World Cup was always a dream," he said.

"Now I’ve got a chance to do it in my own country.

"A lot of players wanted to play in it but the 23 who have been picked are lucky guys. To play for Brazil in Brazil – this is something which may not happen again for 100 years.

"It’s a dream and one which has come true for me. After a good year, a good season at City, my target is now in front of me. They keep coming."
