Strachan appoints former team-mate as first-team coach

Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan has drafted in Gary McAllister as his new first-team coach. The Boro chief has also appointed Jim Blyth as the club's new goalkeeping coach. McAllister has plenty of prior experience of life in the dug out, having taken charge of Leeds United and Coventry City in recent times. He was reported to be a contender to return to the Ricoh Arena this summer, with the Sky Blues having parted company with Chris Coleman. However, McAllister has opted to take more of a back seat role at Boro rather than put himself in the frame for the top job at Coventry. The Scot should have no problem working with Strachan as the pair played alongside each other for Leeds, Coventry and the Scotland national side. McAllister and Blyth are set to join up with their new employers at a close season training camp in La Manga on Saturday. Their appointments follow the recent departures of Colin Cooper, Stephen Pears and Martin Scott from the Riverside Stadium coaching team.
