Middlesbrough appoint new European scout
Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray has brought another of his former team-mates back to the club.
Club legend Mowbray, who was appointed 12 months ago, has brought the likes of Stephen Pears and Colin Cooper back to the club, whilst Mark Proctor was already on-board.
Now Gill has joined his former team-mates after agreeing to become the club's new European scout, giving up his role a local media pundit.
"It's something that I've wanted since I came here, a scouting system to scour more than just the UK. Now we're able to put it into place," said Mowbray.
"We need to continue bringing players into the first team squad through the Academy but also look far and wide for players who can improve the team.
"I've known Gary for more than 25 years, we were team-mates at Boro in the mid-1980s.
"He's got an opinion on football that I like and respect. I have total respect and trust in Gary and he's a very hardworking lad.
"Now we can get him out on the road, up in the air, watching games. He's got a very busy period coming up.
"He will have specific targets that we've already identified that I'll want him to check out and maybe back up what we think and also he'll be looking to unearth players that we can potentially bring to the club."
46-year-old Gill said: "I'm delighted to be back.
"I know everybody down at Rockliffe Park. It's very much an environment where I know everybody.
"It will be great to link up with Tony, Mark Venus, Stephen Pears, Colin Cooper and Mark Proctor, who are all great lads as well as talented people.
"I'm excited about the challenge, progress is being made at the club, we're moving in the right direction and I'm looking forward to playing a part.
"He wants more people on the ground and my role will be to cover Europe.
"I've had a number of conversations with Tony recently both at games and at the training ground and I think he's wanted to put a new scouting network in place since he came back to the club."
