Goalkeeper eyeing swansong at Brazil tournament
Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has revealed he wants to play at the 2014 World Cup, which would take him up to the age of 41.
The Australian international turned 39 in October and his current contract at Craven Cottage expires at the end of the season.
However, the former Bradford and Middlesbrough man shows no signs of slowing down and has expressed his desire to play at both domestic and international level into his 40s, culminating with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
"I feel really good and fit," the Aussie told
The People.
"Mobility is important and so far that is fine too. I hope I will know when the time comes to stop - and I hope it is a while off yet.
"One of my aims is to play in the 2014 World Cup."
Veteran
Schwarzer comes up against another veteran goalkeeper on Sunday in 40-year-old Brad Friedel.
Schwarzer sees the Spurs stopper as well as recently retired Manchester United star Edwin van der Sar, who also played into his 40s, as an example to follow.
"When I look at people like him [Freidel] and also Edwin van der Sar last season, it gives me inspiration to continue playing," he added.
"These days, clubs have a great sport science and medical department and I exploit them as much as possible."
