Spaniards join hunt for Chile defender

Reports in Spain suggest Real Zaragoza are keen on Velez Sarsfield defender Waldo Ponce. The Chile international has expressed a desire to move to Europe during the winter transfer window, keen to test himself outside of his South American comfort zone. Premier League side Wigan were believed to be leading the chase for his signature, with Roberto Martinez reported to be closing in on a deal for the 27-year-old. Velez, however, remain reluctant to sanction a deal, delaying any possible switch from being pushed through. That has not put off Zaragoza, though, who are looking to land Ponce on loan until the end of the season. The Primera Liga outfit will then ask for the right to make the move permanent over the summer should they be suitably impressed. A deal would also rest on the club's ability to steer clear of trouble, with Jose Aurelio Gray's side currently second from bottom in the Spanish top flight.
