Latics stopper hopeful Oman can cope without him in Gulf Cup
Goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi has put club before country in an attempt to keep his place in the Wigan first team.
The 28-year-old, who is currently on a season-long loan from Bolton, believes his priority is to help the Latics maintain their fight for survival with Roberto Martinez's side currently sitting in the bottom three.
The Oman international is now preparing for the crucial match against fellow strugglers West Ham on Saturday rather than playing in the Gulf Cup in Yemen.
He told the
Wigan Evening Post: "I want to concentrate all my attention on Wigan because this is my team now.
"It would have been hard to fly back home for the tournament and then come back here and hope to keep my place.
"I will have to make do with watching on TV, but hopefully Oman can do well without me - we are the reigning champions."
