Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has called on the Premier League to introduce a salary cap, as wages threaten to spiral out of control.
Players have found their pay increasing steadily over the years, but there is a fear that things may get out of hand.
Increased television revenue in 2013/14 could lead to vastly inflated incomes, forcing clubs to pay out even more on wages.
Whelan believes the relevant authorities need to take drastic action to ensure that even top teams are not run into the ground.

He claims a number of the Latics' Premier League rivals would support plans to control wage budgets, with all sides facing similar problems.
"We all agree that there now needs to be controls over wages - even Manchester United agree," Whelan told
Wigan Today.
"(United chief executive) David Gill has made it clear he would support some kind of control, how the controls are put into place is the tricky bit.
"Personally I wouldn't be afraid to take the toughest route of all and have a ceiling on how much each club can pay in wages. A salary limit needs to be enforced."
