Kevin Keen is eyeing an FA Cup meeting with former club West Ham after League One strugglers Colchester shocked Championship club Charlton 2-1 in the third round.
George Moncur fired Colchester ahead just before the half hour from inside the area after some impressive approach play by Marvin Sordell.
Charlton's Cristian Ceballos hit a post soon after but Colchester doubled their lead in the 41st minute, when Sordell ran onto Moncur's fine pass and tucked home.
Moncur and substitute Macauley Bonne came close to adding to Colchester's lead in the second half and although Reza Ghoochannejhad headed home a late goal for Charlton, it was not enough to prevent the Championship side from crashing out.
U's boss Keen, who spent 10 years playing for the Hammers, said: "There's only one club I want in the next round and that's West Ham - it would be a dream for me.
"We were fantastic - the boys were really good and it comes on the back of three really good league performances without any reward.
"Today we got our rewards and I think everyone was absolutely top drawer. A few of them proved that they should be playing at a higher level.
"I thought especially in the first half we were really, really good. Obviously when you go 2-0 up there's a lot riding on it for a club like Colchester United.
"But I thought that we defended manfully in the second half - we had other chances to finish it off but I'm a very happy manager.
"They were both fantastic goals that we scored, not just the finishes but the team play leading up to it and the shape of the team."
Charlton interim head coach Karel Fraeye said he understood Charlton supporters' frustration following another disappointing defeat.
He said: "We were second best in the first half and there was very poor defending for the goals.
"In the second half when we were 2-0 down we had to take a lot of risks trying to score and you know that you can be exposed on the counter-attack.
"We had some possibilities to score but the goal came too late for us. We were not sharp enough in the first half but we put out a team that normally should be strong enough to beat Colchester and they were not.
"I understand the supporters with the situation that we're in now - of course they are frustrated as we have lost a winnable game in the third round.
"It's the start of January and we will see what is possible [about bringing in new players]. It's the board who decide whether or not they appoint a permanent manager and my position is as it always was."
