Reo-Coker defends salary

Nigel Reo-Coker has insisted he never takes his luxurious lifestyle for granted.

Nigel Reo-Coker has defended his weekly wage but insisted he never takes his luxurious lifestyle for granted.

The West Ham midfielder's commitment to the club was called into question earlier this season as he was criticised by some supporters.

Manager Alan Curbishley highlighted a lack of hunger from his players following the defeat against Reading on New Year's Day and mentioned a 'Baby Bentley' culture at Upton Park.

But Reo-Coker, who earns a weekly wage of £15,000, says he has not got carried away by his celebrity status.

"I think this whole Baby Bentley thing that has been said about footballers, it is sometimes over the top," said Reo-Coker, speaking in an interview to lend support to the Mayday for Nurses campaign.

"Obviously we do get paid a substantial amount. That is not down to us, that is down to the money that is involved in the game.

"People must realise that footballers are individuals, they are normal human beings.

"We do have a responsibility and this is something I believe in and I am sure a lot of footballers will believe in."

Reo-Coker is adamant that he has worked hard to achieve his success, but admits he is thankful for his lifestyle.

"I never take anything for granted," he said.

"I have had to work hard to get where I am and to have the things I have got, but at the same time I am always grateful.

"I don't feel that I am better than anyone else, it is just that I have been blessed and I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given."
