Former West Ham striker Guillermo Franco has announced his retirement from international football with Mexico.
The Argentine-born forward, who is without a club after leaving the Hammers in May, has decided to stand aside and let the next generation of Mexican players take centre stage.
Franco, 33, played for Mexico at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups after obtaining Mexican citizenship and now he is considering several options before deciding on the direction of his club career.
"I think my spell in the national team has reached its end, respecting the fact there is a good generation of youngsters coming up behind," he told Mexico's
Acir radio.
Franco won his 25th and last cap in Mexico's 3-1 loss to Argentina in the World Cup second round in South Africa in June.
New Mexico manager Efrain Flores overlooked Franco for this weekend's friendly at home to Ecuador.
