West Ham striker Carlton Cole has been charged by the FA over a comment he posted on social media.

The FA has decided the message "was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper and/or brings the game into disrepute.”

The charge relates to Cole's involvement in a Twitter altercation with a Tottenham supporter following West Ham's 2-2 Premier League draw at White Hart Lane on February 22.

Cole posted a tweet in reply to the fan before later deleting the message.

The 31-year-old former Chelsea striker has been in trouble before for previous postings on social media.

He was fined £20,000 by the FA in 2011 for a tweet he posted during England's friendly against Ghana at Wembley.

Cole has until 6pm on Thursday to respond to the charge.
