Webber axed for Poor form

Ray Lewington says that Danny Webber has been dropped due to poor form.

Watford boss Ray Lewington says that Danny Webber has been dropped from his first team squad due to poor form.

The striker has missed the last two games after previously recovering from a dislocated shoulder that ruled him out for two months.

Before accruing the knock Webber was in fantastic form for The Hornets, although has now scored just once in his last eight appearances.

Lewington backed the former Manchester United man to rediscover his touch, although explained that he was not in contention for a starting berth based on current performances.

"He has not been playing particularly well," Lewington told the Evening Standard.

"Danny was absolutely on fire before his injury but since he came back he has been playing catch-up.

"He played against Coventry and was really poor, but he is still a very good player."

Whilst destroying Championship defences Webber was attracting interest from the likes of Charlton, Southampton and West Ham.

However, despite earlier suggestions that the transfer rumours were affecting the 23-year-old's form, Lewington has now denied that off-the-field matters are contributing to his disappointing run of games.

"Sometimes there is an element of truth in these stories but I haven't heard anything, I don't think that is Danny's problem."
