Huddersfield have completed their third summer signing with the capture of midfielder Jack Payne from Southend.

Payne, 21, has signed a three-year contract and Huddersfield, who must pay Southend compensation, have the option of a further year.

"It's great that we've been able to bring a player like Jack to Huddersfield, as many clubs were understandably interested in him," head coach David Wagner told the club's official website.

"In my opinion he is probably one of the most interesting young British midfielders in the country and I am proud that we will have the chance to help him to develop his potential to his highest level in the future.

"Quality number 10s are, in my opinion, the hardest players to find and it is not regular that players of Jack's quality become available."

Payne, who will officially join the Terriers when his Southend contract expires on July 1, was recently voted Shrimpers Trust player of the season and junior Blues player of the season, while he also won the club's goal of the season award.

He started out at Tottenham and joined the youth system at Roots Hall when he was 15, going on to make his first-team debut against Yeovil in the Capital One Cup in August 2013.

Payne scored a total of 17 goals in 88 appearances for Southend and was regular starter in Sky Bet League 1 last season.

Huddersfield have already signed goalkeeper Joel Coleman from Oldham and 6ft 5in midfielder Ivan Paurevic from Russian club FC Ufa, both for undisclosed fees.

Wagner and assistant Christophe Buehler also signed new undisclosed deals with the Terriers last week, while former Notts County, Reading, Norwich and Leeds midfielder Andrew Hughes has joined the club as first-team coach.
