Huddersfield kept their faint hopes of automatic promotion alive with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Preston on Good Friday.
Aidan McGeady (23) had given the visitors a surprise lead at the John Smith's Stadium, but Huddersfield rallied thanks to goals from Elias Kachunga (43) and Jack Payne (70).
Jordan Hugill (79) once again levelled up proceedings before Collin Quaner (90+6) snatched the win for the home side following up after Aaron Mooy had seen his penalty saved.
David Wagner's side remain in third spot, eight points behind second-placed Newcastle with five matches remaining.
Chris Wood scored an injury-time equaliser as play-off hopefuls Leeds snatched a potentially crucial point in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle.
Jamaal Lascelles put Newcastle ahead in the 67th minute but Wood levelled in the 95th minute at St James' Park.
Brighton took a huge stride towards promotion, and the Championship title, with a 2-0 victory over Wolves at a rain-soaked Molineux.
A goal in either half from talisman Anthony Knockaert - the 14th and 15th goals of his stellar season - fired the Seagulls five points clear of Newcastle at the top of the table.
Luke Varney scored an own goal as Ipswich Town claimed a battling 2-1 win over Burton.
Former Ipswich forward Varney turned into his own net in the 52nd minute, before Freddie Sears doubled the lead (79), with Lucas Akins (87) grabbing a late consolation from the penalty spot.
Nigel Clough's side are now just two points above the drop zone after seeing many of their rivals pick up points.
Fernando Forestieri (84) grabbed the winner as sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday defeated Cardiff 1-0 at Hillsborough.
Fulham remain two points behind the Owls in seventh following their 3-1 victory away at Norwich.
Stefan Johansen (5), Tom Cairney (48) and Floyd Ayite (89) netted for the Cottagers, who played for the whole of the second-half with 10 men after Chris Martin was shown a straight red card for an elbow on Mitchell Dijks.
Lasse Vibe (32, 82) and Jota (70, 90) both scored twice as Brentford thrashed Derby 4-0 at Griffin Park to inflict a first loss upon new Rams boss Gary Rowett.
Marlon Pack (14) and Jamie Paterson (40) were on target as Bristol City moved six points clear of the relegation places with a much-needed 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers.
Blackburn remain in the relegation zone despite claiming a 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest, with Tommie Hoban (78) heading the winner.
However, Rovers are just two points off safety, with Burton and Forest occupying the places immediately above the bottom three.
Birmingham's winless run now stands at eight matches after they were held to a 1-1 draw at already relegated Rotherham.
Kerim Frei (73) had put the Blues on course to secure their first victory since February 24, but Danny Ward (85) ensured the Millers ended their 10-match losing run.
