Burnley hand a trial to giant international hit-man

Burnley have handed a trial to Latvia international striker Gatis Kalnins. The tall 6ft 3ins hit-man, who has made 19 appearances for his country, plays his football for Skonto Riga. Clarets boss Owen Coyle has confirmed he will run the rule over the striker when Burnley take on Partick Thistle on Monday. "Gatis joined up with the squad on Sunday night and we plan to have a look at him in Scotland," Coyle told the club's official website.

Eager

Meanwhile, summer signing Diego Penny is looking forward to beginning his new career in England after an anxious wait for his work permit. The Peru international is free to start his Clarets career after being given the green light by the Home Office and the shot-stopper is looking to make the most of his English adventure. "The important thing for me is to play at a higher level," said Penny. "I have spent my whole career playing in Peru. "When news came of Burnley wanting to sign me the supporters there said they were delighted for me, so I feel I leave the club in a good position and on good terms. "It has been difficult waiting for the permit and the visa. Naturally, you want to join your new team as soon as possible, but I was always confident of getting the work permit."
