Clubs vote to reduce number of replacements available

Football League clubs will only be able to name five substitutes on their bench next season, a reduction of two. Managers had been able to name seven players in league matches last term, but the rule has been changed following a vote at the EGM at Leicester City's King Power Stadium on Thursday. The Football League believes reducing the number of substitutes available to managers will help clubs adopt Uefa Financial Fair Play ruling. "This was felt to be a sensible and prudent step given the financial challenges facing many football clubs and the commitment made earlier this summer to adopt Uefa's Financial Fair Play framework," a spokesman confirmed on the Football League's official website. Clubs will still be permitted to name seven substitutes in the Carling Cup and FA Cup and five in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
