Middlesbrough are closing in on the signing of Spanish defender Damia Abella, Sky Sports can confirm.

The 32-year-old is due to undergo a medical with the Championship club, after a deal was agreed with Osasuna.

Abella, who has previously played for Barcelona, Racing Santander and Real Betis, is set to put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Riverside.

Abella will help fill the right-back void that coach Aitor Karanka has been looking to plug since allowing Joszef Varga to return to Hungary in the summer.

Boro have also been strongly linked with Hajduk Split's Bosnian full-back Avdija Vrsajevic.
