Brighton have signed versatile Greg Halford on loan from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest and he goes straight into their starting line-up for Tuesday's clash with Wigan.

Albion boss Sami Hyypia needs centre-half cover for the injured Aaron Hughes and the Fin also wants another striker. It remains to be seen how Halford will be used at the Amex Stadium as he is capable of playing in defence, midfield or up front.

The 29-year-old has been close to several loan moves previously, with a switch to Bolton falling through after the player suffered an ankle injury.

Hyypia told the club's official website: "With Aaron Hughes out injured we were faced with a similar problem we have had in goal and needed cover.

"Greg has an abundance of experience not only in the Championship but also in the Premier League, and with Aaron out we wanted that level of experience to be replaced as well, so he is a good fit."

Halford has made 70 starts and 12 substitute appearances for Forest in just over two years with the club, scoring eight goals.

He began his career at Colchester, before spells with Reading, Sunderland, Charlton, Sheffield United, Wolves and Portsmouth, prior to his move to the City Ground.
