Sky Bet Championship: Bournemouth's Callum Wilson staying grounded

Callum Wilson is refusing to get carried away by the fine form being recognised at Sky Bet Championship leaders Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe has led his side to seven straight victories in all competitions, with six of those enough to carry them to the second tier summit.

Impressive progress through October has seen Howe named Manager of the Month, while free-scoring striker Wilson has taken the player prize.

There is, however, still a long way to go, with focus on the south coast having already shifted from crushing victories and Premier League scalps secured in the Capital One Cup.

Wilson told Sky Sports: “It’s nice, obviously, when you’re winning 8-0 and beating Premier League teams (West Bromwich Albion), but you enjoy it for the day and then you know you’ve got another game coming round thick and fast a few days later. You have to make sure you’re ready and focused on the job in hand for the next game.

“There is complete confidence, winning seven on the bounce, but I think you need to keep your feet on the ground. It’s a long season and anything can happen week to week.

“It’s nice to be up there. You’ve got to enjoy it while you are up there because the next game could see us third or fourth. You have to be at your best in every game to ensure that you perform as well as you can do and keep grinding out the results.”

On his monthly gong and the brand of football he is benefitting from at Bournemouth, Wilson added: “Strikers get a lot of credit for their goals but, ultimately, it’s down to the team effort.

“My goal against Norwich summed that up. I think the team had 31 passes throughout the move and I had one touch, which was the goal. I got the recognition for it, but as a team we are a great group here and working hard for each other.

“Strikers pride themselves on scoring goals, so when you’re on a bit of form like that it’s fantastic. But you have to keep yourself on the ground. In the two games we’ve had this month, I haven’t scored in them, so that shows you can go a few games without scoring if you’re not at your best.”

Having reached the summit, Bournemouth intend on staying there, with Wilson also chasing down the Golden Boot – with nine goals to his name so far.

He said on hitting ultimate targets: “Hard work is what gets you those things. If you don’t do that, it’s not going to happen. Week in, week out we have to make sure that we’re working hard for each other and hopefully our goals will be achieved.”

Callum Wilson was talking to Sky Sports on behalf of Sky Bet, the Title Sponsor of The Football League.
