Chris Powell claimed he was "embarrassed" by the reception he received after suffering a nightmare return to former club Charlton.

Powell received a rapturous welcome on his first time back to the Valley - and then watched man-of-the-match Tony Watt tear his side apart.

Watt capped a fine display by netting two second-half goals to add to Johann Gudmundsson's first-half free-kick.

Huddersfield manager Powell, who left Charlton in March 2014, said: "We were second best.

"We were beaten by the better team and we just couldn't get going over the course of the game. We didn't deserve anything.

"My relationship with Charlton supporters and the way they are, I wouldn't think anything less of them.

"It was beyond what any supporters would do to the opposition manager. But I'm not surprised with how they were.

"It was very touching and emotional for me but I'm quite embarrassed as well. They have moved on and we have moved on.

"But it was a great moment for me in my long career and it's something that I won't forget.

Tony Watt ensured Huddersfield manager Chris Powell suffered a nightmare return to The Valley as Charlton won 3-0.

"I'm employed by a different club now and of course everyone has great memories of my times here. But I'm the Huddersfield manager and my supporters at the end were wanting me and my team to do well. But we didn't manage to do that."

With tickets priced at £5 the ground was packed out and the home fans were finally on their feet thanks to Gudmunsson's fine 34th minute free-kick.

The Icelandic winger is a dead-ball specialist and he proved that by curling home a 25-yard set-piece past Alex Smithies.

Charlton were on top and extended their advantage just three minutes into the second half thanks to Watt.

Charlton sealed the win via the impressive Scottish striker in the 71st minute on an afternoon to forget for Powell and his players.

Charlton manager Guy Luzon said: "My target when I'm coach is to bring results and the way we bring the results.

"It was very important for us that today with a full stadium that the fans and the people around the club would go home with a good feeling. It's also very important the way we play.

"Today we played well on the ground, we played with a lot of combinations in attack and we were calm with the ball.

"We are happy with the result and we are happy with the way we played and that's important to me. When I win ugly it's okay but I like to win beautiful. I believe, if you play ugly football, in the long-term you will not bring results.

Luzon hailed two-goal man-of-the-match Watt sand said: "Tony is a player that in the summer I fought a lot to sign him at Standard Liege and I'm happy that me and him are together at Charlton now."
