Sunderland have taken Dutch goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter on trial as they look to solve their goalkeeping crisis ahead of the new Championship season.

The Black Cats recently sold their first-choice 'keeper Jordan Pickford to Everton for £30m, while Vito Mannone joined Reading for £2m on Wednesday after four seasons at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland now have only two goalkeepers in their senior squad; Portuguese shot-stopper Mika, who is yet to make a single appearance for the club since joining from Boavista last summer, and Polish youngster Maksymilian Stryjek.

Ruiter is currently a free agent after being released by Eredivisie side Utrecht at the end of the last campaign.

The 30-year-old, who made 15 appearances last season, is training with the Black Cats and could be involved in the club's upcoming friendly against Bradford.
