Sunderland have signed Dutch goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter on a free transfer as Simon Grayson continues to build his new-look squad at the Stadium of Light.

Ruiter has signed a two-year contract with the Black Cats and is set to challenge fellow new signing Jason Steele and Swiss goalkeeper Mika for a first-team place this season.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has spent the majority of his career with Utrecht in the Eredivisie but was released by the club at the end of last season.

"I'm very pleased to be here because I had a great couple of days training with the team and played some good games, so I really wanted to sign and pleased I'm finally a Sunderland player," Ruiter told Sunderland's website.

"From the moment I stepped through the door everything was so professional. It's such a big club and for me it was always a dream to play in England, so if a club like Sunderland comes and asks if you want to sign it's a big chance."

Ruiter becomes Sunderland's fourth summer signing following the arrival of Aiden McGeady, James Vaughan and Steele.
