Sunderland have suffered a blow with the news goalkeeper Craig Gordon is to miss their relegation run-in.
The Scotland international is out for four to six months after undergoing knee surgery in Sweden on Monday.
The 28-year-old flew out to see world-renowned tendon specialist Professor Hakan Alfredson and is now recuperating after the operation went well.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce told the club's
official website on Tuesday: "Craig had the operation yesterday and it went well.
"He'll be out for about four to six months now.
No choice
"Craig's been following a programme but when the specialist had a look at the knee again, we were left with no choice but to go ahead with the surgery.
"That just sums our luck up at the moment."
The keeper has missed the last six games as the out-of-form Black Cats have plunged down the Premier League table.
Boss Steve Bruce had hoped to have the shot-stopper back in goal for Saturday's crucial clash with Wigan at the Stadium of Light.
