Jewell enjoys Derby return

Derby manager Nigel Clough believes his side are suffering from a lack of confidence after they lost 2-1 to Ipswich. The Rams raced into an early lead through Alberto Bueno but Ipswich fought back and claimed three points thanks to goals from new signing Jimmy Bullard and David Norris. Clough said: "We had a brilliant start, we started well in both halves. "At 1-0 we were looking relatively comfortable but then one from 30 yards goes in and it changes the game totally, it was the turning point in the game. "Stephen Bywater has come straight in at half-time and held his hand up. "He should have dealt with it better and it's that one very small mistake and it's 1-1 and we are chasing the game again, which we didn't deserve to be. "We came out in the second half and for 20-odd minutes we played very well. "Then they had their first serious attack, I think they had three shots all game and scored with two of them and it seems to be the way it's going at the moment. "For 20 minutes it looked as if we were going to get the lead ourselves and one creeps in the bottom corner. "It's a big confidence thing, we get the goal and then we get pegged back. "Each time it happens it takes a knock every time and the confidence ebbs away. "But what we are looking for is the effort and the commitment and that's certainly not in question, the players gave everything they had tonight. "We can play a little bit better and make better decisions but they certainly can't try any more than they did tonight."

Jewell reaction

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell was pleased with the character his side showed. Jewell said: "I think we have shown character, we said to the players we have won a game but there's so much more we can do better which is an encouraging sign. "There are little shoots of progress but we don't want to get carried away. But we have shown character to come back from conceding an early goal. "It was a good strike from Jimmy. He gives us something different, he wants to get on the ball all the time, he's enthusiastic and he can play and he gives us a different dimension. "I know Derby are not on a great run at the moment but they haven't got a bad home record and it's not an easy place to come. "We tried to get at them early on, which we did, but they counter-attacked us quite well. But we stuck in there and we just had that little bit of luck that you need and we've hung on. "I don't really want us to be hanging on but that's how we are at the moment and by winning games that breeds confidence. "It's encouraging, nowhere is easy in the Championship, anyone can beat anyone and there are no gimme games, so to come anywhere and win you've got to work hard and we did that. "We are not used to winning games, I thought we should have killed the game off at times but we didn't and we gave the ball away and made little errors through nervousness, but that will go when we win games."
