Former Liverpool striker hopes for long-term Hillsborough stay
Striker Neil Mellor is hopeful of a long-term stay at League One side Sheffield Wednesday following his recent loan deal.
The 27-year-old former Liverpool striker joined from Championship outfit Preston on Friday reuniting with former North End manager Alan Irvine at Hillsborough.
The striker, who netted 30 times in 113 appearances during his four-year spell at Deepdale is now away with the Owls squad for pre-season training in Austria but is hopeful that a successful loan-period would result in a permanent move.
"Obviously it's down to Alan to see how well I do and go from there," Mellor told
The Star.
"It's a loan, but I want to prove why he has brought me here, so hopefully I can earn a longer deal."
Excited
Mellor, who famously scored a last minute winner for Liverpool against Arsenal in a Premier League match back in 2004 is looking forward to teaming up with his old boss Irvine.
"I'm very excited to be here. It was a long time trying to sort out a deal but it's done now and I can't wait to get started," he told
Wednesday's official website.
"The size of the football club was a major factor for me coming here.
"I've played at Hillsborough in the past and the fans have always been superb. So I'm hoping for a successful season.
"I'm sure the fans will support us with big crowds. I'm dropping down to League One but it doesn't bother me that much because this is Sheffield Wednesday. Alan Irvine and the size of Sheffield Wednesday were the two main attractions."
Meanhwhile, Irvine said: "He's a goalscorer and a good character. I was interested whether it was a loan or a permanent deal. He was desperate to come here."
