Mick makes selection promise

Mick McCarthy has vowed not to make drastic team selections again after Wolves' suspended fine.

Only the best from now on for Wanderers boss

Mick McCarthy has vowed not to make drastic team selections again after Wolves' suspended fine. McCarthy controversially made 10 changes for the visit to Manchester United in December, just three days after winning away at Tottenham, and the Wolves boss' starting XI was met with fierce criticism as the Wanderers were easily beaten 3-0 by the champions. But the former Republic of Ireland international argued he had no choice but to rest a host of his first team squad and was somewhat justified when Wolves triumphed against fellow strugglers Burnley at Molineux 2-0 four days later. But the move has been frowned upon by the Premier League, who have handed the West Midlands outfit a suspended £25,000 fine on Thursday and McCarthy admits he will not be able to make wholesale changes to his side any time soon.

Precedent

"Will I change 10 players again? I think you will find it isn't possible to do it," said the former Sunderland manager. "The discussion you need to have is with the Premier League about the parameters. "Not too much affects my team selection - but the ruling has been put there. "We'll have to see if anyone else does it but, come on, it's been put there as a deterrent. It has set a precedent and I've accepted it. "I've accepted what has happened to me and so have the club. I am sure loads of people will have opinions but it is not for me."

Striker and record signing Kevin Doyle believes many Premier League clubs will face being fined if they repeat the action taken against Wolves. He said: "They might end up fining a lot of teams over the next few years if they are going to go about it that way. "If you are going start fining teams for changing teams for the FA Cup, League Cup, and when they go from the Champions League to playing in the Premier League, why is that any different for us?" McCarthy admits he will be fielding an unchanged side against Chelsea following the fine performance in defeating Tottenham at Molineux eight days ago. But there will have be a change amongst the substitutes as on-loan Chelsea player Michael Mancienne is ineligible to face his parent club.
