McCarthy turns to fringe players; Sturrock considers changes
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy will give his fringe players a chance against Southend United as Paul Sturrock weighs up changes.
McCarthy has confirmed he is likely to leave out the majority of players who started Saturday's 1-1 draw at Everton in the Premier League.
With a game against Newcastle at the weekend to consider, McCarthy will freshen up his team with a couple of debutants and players who have barely featured so far this season.
Striker Sam Winnall and defender Danny Batth, both 19, will start after impressing McCarthy in training.
Winnall could start up front alongside Andy Keogh, while the likes of Ronald Zubar and Richard Stearman could be brought in to help out Batth in defence.
Wayne Hennessey is an option to replace Marcus Hahnemann in goal, and Nenad Milijas and Greg Halford are other players hoping to start.
Wolves survived a scare at this stage of the competition last season after overcoming Swindon Town on penalties before losing to eventual winners Manchester United in the third round.
Southend news
Southend manager Paul Sturrock is keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of the Carling Cup clash with the Premier League outfit.
New signing Bilel Mohsni could make his first start for the Blues after making an appearance from the bench in Saturday's 3-1 league defeat to Port Vale.
The defender completed his move to Roots Hall last week along with midfielder Adam Bouzid after the club gained international clearance for the pair.
Sturrock is likely to make more changes after back-to-back defeats by Aldershot and Port Vale in the league.
Matthew Paterson will hope to keep his place in the starting XI after being promoted from the bench last Saturday.
