Wigley confident of keeping Beattie
Southampton head coach Steve Wigley believes James Beattie will stay with Saints.
Head coach Steve Wigley is confident striker James Beattie will still be at Southampton when the transfer window closes.Aston Villa have failed in a £6 million bid for the England international striker and Everton have been linked with Beattie.
The forward scored the quickest goal of the Premiership season so far as Saints lost 2-1 to Chelsea and afterwards Wigley said he expects to keep his top scorer.
"I'm pretty confident James will stay here," he said. "I've not spoken to anyone about selling James, but it's not open for debate."
Wigley, who disputed the award of a penalty for Frank Lampard's winning goal, said he is keen to keep Beattie.
He added: "James has been excellent for this club. If you look at his goalscoring record, there aren't many English strikers can beat it, other than Michael Owen and Alan Shearer. Someone of that quality is worth a lot of money."
