Southampton boss Nigel Adkins says work is ongoing to secure the capture of Japan international striker Tadanari Lee.
Sky Sports revealed last week Lee had agreed terms with the Championship leaders and was training with the club ahead of his proposed switch.
Adkins has admitted his liking for the J League star - who was in the stands as the club beat Coventry in the FA Cup on Saturday - and confirmed the push to secure his work permit is ongoing.
The Saints boss told the club's
official website: "We'd like to bring him in but I have to be careful what I say because the work permit process is going on.
"He came to watch the game and has been involved the last few days doing some work.
"We have to wait for the work permit process to take place and that's all I can say on that one."
Other targets
Adkins added the club were keen to strengthen in this transfer window to give themselves the best possible chance of reaching the Premier League.
"We're doing a lot of things behind the scenes and there's been a lot of things going on to try and bring in that quality to the group of players that we've got," he said.
"It might be a small signing, it might be a loan signing, there's every chance it might be a major signing, and that's what we're endeavouring to do.
"Our endeavour is to give ourselves that opportunity from where we stand now at the top of the league, that great opportunity that we're presented with from the hard work that's gone on, to win this division and get in the Premier League.
"The transfer window in January is a challenging one but we have a chance to get promoted to the Premier League and we're going to do everything we can to give ourselves that opportunity to do it."
