Mark Hughes believes his new contract sends the right message to everyone involved with the club

Stoke boss Mark Hughes wants to put his Stamford Bridge hoodoo behind him when his team faces former club Chelsea on Saturday.

Hughes scored 25 goals in 95 appearances for Chelsea, in a spell from 1995 to 1998, but the former striker has never won a game as a visiting manager at the Bridge.

After a two-week break for international matches Hughes is hoping his team will put on a decent performance against the Premier League leaders.

I've not won there as manager but enjoy going back to Stamford Bridge. It was a good place for me and I've many good memories.

Victor Moses is not available for Stoke as part of his loan deal from Chelsea, but Marc Muniesa, Philipp Wollscheid, Erik Pieters and Stephen Ireland are all available for Hughes.

He said: "I said when I got the job that I wanted us to be a consistent top-10 team. We did that last year and hopefully we will do it again.

"We have acquitted ourselves well in big games on the road. We want to go down to London and put in another good performance.

"I don't think Chelsea have been playing as well as they were at the start of the season, but they are still picking up results.

"They don't have Europe to contend with now and maybe that will help them in their bid to lift the title.

"I've not won there as manager but enjoy going back to Stamford Bridge. It was a good place for me and I've many good memories.

"Jon Walters had a knock but we envisage him being ok - Marc Muniesa, Philipp Wollscheid, Erik Pieters and Stephen Ireland are back too."

The Potters announced last Friday that Hughes, who was appointed to the job in the summer of 2013, had signed a new contract through to 2019.

They have thrived under the Welshman so far, last term securing their best Premier League finish of ninth with their highest points total of 50 - records they are looking to better this time around, as they are currently lying 10th on 42 points from 30 matches.

And Hughes has every confidence things can keep improving for Stoke in the seasons to come, having been told that the funds would be available should the right player come along.

"We haven't spent a great deal since I've been here - I think it is something like a net spend of £6million," the former Manchester City manager said.

"I've never been in any doubt that if the right target is available and it is a possibility to get it over the line, then finances will be made available to me."

Stoke are currently only a point worse off than eighth-placed Swansea, but seventh-placed Tottenham have 11 more points than the Potters.

Asked if Stoke's goal for the season was a push for eighth place, Hughes said: "Yes, it is fair to say that - and we will always strive to be even higher than that.

"Certainly that (a finish higher than eighth) won't happen this year, but the anticipation and hope is that in the seasons that follow we can possibly break through that glass ceiling."
