Colchester have handed striker Simon Thomas a trial after his departure from Crystal Palace.
The 25-year-old, who was on loan with Darlington earlier this season, made just one appearance in 18 months for the Eagles and was released last month.
Thomas has since signed for Billericay Town but the non-League club have given Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd permission to run the rule over him.
He made an instant impression with two goals in a 5-1 win for the Us' reserves against Essex neighbours Southend on Wednesday afternoon.
