Gary Megson has admitted he would "love" the chance to return as manager of Sheffield Wednesday at some stage in the future.
Former Bolton chief had family ties to the Owls through his father
Gary Megson has spoken of his sadness at losing his job at Sheffield Wednesday, though he would still "love" the chance to manage them again in the future.
The former Bolton boss was sacked despite the Owls currently sitting third in League One, just two points off the automatic promotion places.
In a statement issued through the League Managers Association, Megson has admitted his disappointment in not being able to finish the job at a club where his father was once captain.
Wednesday, who defeated city rivals Sheffield United in Megson's final game, have placed
assistant boss Chris Evans and coach Neil Thompson in charge while they search for a permanent replacement.
Strong affection
"I am very saddened that I will no longer have the opportunity to manage my hometown club, Sheffield Wednesday," the statement read on the LMA's website.
"With just 13 games left this season and currently in third place in npower League One, it is very disappointing that I will not have the chance to guide this great club to promotion and back to the Championship.
"At some point in the future, I would love to come back to Hillsborough to finish the job I feel I had only just started.
"I am sure that many people are aware of the strong affection I hold for Sheffield Wednesday, not only from my playing days, but also the family connection with my father having served as club captain.
"One of the reasons why I took the job was to be able to work with the Sheffield Wednesday supporters. They have been terrific, a highlight of my career, and I would love to work with such great fans again.
"I would like to thank the staff at the training ground, they are fantastic people, and the players, who are honest, dedicated and full of enthusiasm. I cannot praise them highly enough.
"I wish the club all the very best for the rest of the season."
Owls owner Milan Mandaric
told Sky Sports on Thursday he was hopeful of naming a new manager "in the next 24 hours". Former Cardiff City and Wolves boss Dave Jones is the current favourite to take over at Hillsborough.
