Neil Warnock says Cardiff would have loved to sign Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic but couldn't afford him

Neil Warnock has admitted a lack of funds has contributed to Cardiff's poor start to the season.

The club are targeting their first Premier League victory of the campaign on Saturday against Fulham, who were promoted to the top flight alongside Cardiff.

Desperate to lift themselves off the bottom of the table, Warnock suggested that if his team had the funds to buy Fulham's summer signing Aleksander Mitrovic, they would be in a stronger position.

"We couldn't afford him but if we could have done I would have loved somebody like him," Warnock said.

"He epitomises English football really, he knows how to get the free-kicks off the referees. He's a threat.

"It's a good test for us - we knew how good (Fulham) were, but it doesn't phase us. This season it's different we haven't invested that amount of money.

"We have to keep firing and the lads have to come up with a clean sheet and a lot of goals."

Warnock added: "If I'd have signed Mitrovic I'd have been delighted with what we've got. I don't think we're out of it really, but when you're in the Premier League you can't really get anything less than what you've paid for him.

"It's difficult at this level unless you have that £20m-30m for a player."

Fulham are currently 17th in the table - two points above the relegation zone.

They have conceded the most goals in the league so far this season (21), and Warnock hinted his surprise with Fulham's position given the club's summer net spend of £105m under Slavisa Jokanovic.

"I must admit I did think they would be mid-table with the amount of money they spent," he added. "It shows you it's not always money that talks; they've got some quality players.

"We've been looking at the squad this week and they've got tremendous players. It's getting a system in any team whatever level you are to get the players knitted together. I like the manager he's solid, a good bloke."
