Veteran striker returns to Selhust Park

Dougie Freedman has had his Southend contract cancelled by mutual consent in order to allow him to join Crystal Palace as their new assistant manager. The forward has made 41 appearances during his two-year stint with the Shrimpers but will now work alongside new Eagles boss Paul Hart and coach John Pemberton. Meanwhile, Southend assessed on-trial midfielder Grant Kerr as the reserves crashed to a 5-0 defeat against Watford at Roots Hall. Goalkeeper Kelvin Jack featured for the club for the first time since joining on non-contract terms while midfielder Anthony Grant got 45 minutes under his belt following his return to fitness from an ankle injury.
