Youngster Sow commits to the Eagles until 2015

Crystal Palace have retained the services of teenage midfielder Ghassimu Sow on a three-year contract. The 17-year-old has been called up by England's Under-16s and is the latest talent to be produced by the Palace youth academy. The Championship side have seen the likes of Victor Moses, Wilfried Zaha and Sean Scannell come through the youth ranks at Selhurst Park in recent years. "Gus is a terrfic lad both on and off the pitch and very different to what we have had in previous seasons," Academy boss Gary Issott told the club's official website.

Makelele role

"He is a very defence-minded midfield player and tackles phenomenally well, almost in a (Claude) Makelele role." The new deal is reward for an excellent season at academy level, during which Sow scored three goals in 24 games, and he could feature in Dougie Freedman's first-team squad next term. "As an Under-16 he played every minute of every Under-18 game along with Ryan Inniss," Issott added. "We pushed him along early as we felt he was ready and he has not let anybody down."
