Jewell - No budget issues

Ipswich boss Paul Jewell says he fully understands the strict transfer budget which has been imposed by owner Marcus Evans this summer.

I understand the tight financial situation, says Ipswich boss

Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell says he fully understands the strict transfer budget which has been imposed by owner Marcus Evans this summer. Jewell has signed four players, including a season-long loan, for a total thought to be around £300,000 as he looks to improve on last season's 15th-placed finish. Tractor Boys owner Evans has sanctioned moves for Macclesfield defender Elliott Hewitt, who was signed for an undisclosed fee, out-of-contract pair Luke Chambers and Scott Loach, plus teenage loanee Massimo Luongo, who has arrived from Tottenham. Jewell is still attempting to sign more players ahead of Saturday's Championship opener against recently-relegated Blackburn at Portman Road, but admits there is no chance of Ipswich spending lavishly on big-name stars. Nonetheless, he has dismissed suggestions that the prudent approach is down to Evans losing interest in the club.

Bottomless

"I understand the situation," Jewell told the East Anglian Daily Times. "We lost David Norris to Portsmouth 18 months ago because they offered him better wages. "Now when you look at Portsmouth, and Glasgow Rangers, it proves it is not a bottomless pit. "We would all like money to spend but I am big enough to know at the moment there is not a huge amount of money to throw at it. "The owner is as committed as ever but sometimes you have to give youth an opportunity. "We have to start getting in players that are going to be here for the next three or four years rather than just one year who may be past their best. "I am happy to go along with a building a squad rather than, like last year, just having players who have played at the level above. "We now have youngsters who are hungry to play at that level above."
