Sean Dyche says Anders Lindegaard has joined Burnley to fight for a starting berth

Sean Dyche says Anders Lindegaard has joined Burnley to compete for the No. 1 spot following the injury sustained by Tom Heaton.

Free agent Lindegaard joined the Clarets on a deal until the end of the season after Heaton required surgery on a dislocated shoulder suffered during Burnley's 1-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace earlier this month.

The 33-year-old Denmark international, who spent last season with Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End, had been training with Burnley, and Dyche says Lindegaard's motivation is to become a regular starter for the club.

"With Tom getting injured, we started looking around," Dyche said ahead of Saturday's visit of Huddersfield.

"We knew of Anders, we knew he'd turned down a couple of things [and] we knew he had a good history.

"He is coming out of a little quiet spell but he's very motivated. I spoke with him as did [goalkeeping coach] Billy Mercer of course, and he seems very motivated to come in and really fight and get fit and sharp, which he has shown even over a number days.

"He spoke to us about his hunger and his desire to work hard, not just to be here for the sake of it, but to actually work hard to try and progress and try and put pressure on the No.1 situation.

Despite their elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Leeds in midweek, Dyche is delighted with Burnley's start to the season which sees them seventh in the Premier League, one place behind Huddersfield on goal difference.

"We've had a really solid start and there have been some good performances and in some, we've had to tough it out," said Dyche.

"We probably know we have to do that over the season anyway - that's not new to us, but there are still new things to work on.

"But the benefit of getting the points on the board is that it relaxes everyone outside of you. Your players believe slightly more, your fans believe more but there are no guarantees and it doesn't mean you're going to win the next one.

"Therefore, we know we need to be right on top of our game starting at Huddersfield on Saturday and that's what we are going to look to do."
