Former Burnley manager and skipper passes away

Burnley legend Jimmy Adamson has passed away at the age of 82. Born in nearby Ashington, Adamson gave three decades of service to the Clarets as a former manager and captain of the club. He played at Burnley throughout his career, notching up 486 outings for the Lancashire club to rank him sixth in their all-time appearance list. The defender joined the club as an 18-year-old in 1947 and made his debut five years later in a home clash with Bolton. Adamson skippered the Clarets to Championship success in 1959/60 and was named the 1961/62 Footballer of the Year.

England call

At the age of 33 he was included in England's squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile, although never won a cap for his country. After hanging up his boots Adamson joined the Turf Moor coaching staff and took over as manager of the club in 1970. He spent six years in charge of the Clarets and also enjoyed spells at the helm of Sunderland and Leeds United, as well as Sparta Rotterdam. The ex-defender was honoured at Turf Moor earlier this year when a suite bearing his name was opened.
