Chris Hughton says that a lot of big clubs struggle in the Championship following relegation

New Brighton manager Chris Hughton says that his former club Norwich City may have underestimated how just how difficult life would be in the Sky Bet Championship following relegation from the Premier League.

Hughton was speaking after Norwich announced that Neil Adams was leaving the club just nine months after replacing him as Canaries boss with the club seventh in the table, and out of the FA Cup after beaten by League One side Preston in the third round.

Hughton took charge of 82 games at Norwich and in his first season led them to 11th place in the Premier League but he left the Canaries in April with the club one place above the drop zone and they went on to be relegated to the Championship.

The new Brighton boss told Sky Sports News HQ: "They are a very ambitious club having come down last season and I get the feeling that it is all about trying to get back (into the Premier League) at the first attempt.

"Because certainly if it is not at the first attempt, then it becomes harder. They have got a very big and strong squad at the moment and they have very strong ambitions to come straight back up again.

"They have found that the Championship is a tough division and it's been proved over the last few years that the big teams who have come down have found it difficult in this division, some to get back straight away but some have taken a little bit longer."
