I was at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as Chelsea's boys from Brazil - David Luiz and Ramires - both scored their second goals for the club and I have actually been lucky enough to commentate on all four of the Premier League goals scored by those two players. Luiz has now got two in five games, coming against the two Manchester clubs, while Ramires has two in 34 appearances with his dream goal against Man City following his strike in the 4-0 win over Bolton in January. In contrast, Fernando Torres has not scored in seven games and his last Premier League goals were for Liverpool at Wolves on January 22. The match marked John Terry's 499th club game (including six on loan at Nottingham Forest). He should reach his landmark 500th at Stoke at the start of April. Meanwhile, Frank Lampard is on 498 Chelsea games (all competitions), so he could get to 500 when Chelsea play Manchester United in the Champions League. From City's point of view, Sunday was their first Premier League defeat in London under Roberto Mancini. They clearly missed Carlos Tevez who has scored in five consecutive Premier League matches against Chelsea. I also noticed an interesting sequence in Manchester City's last seven Premier League results. They read: LDW LDW L. Maybe we should all put our money on a draw when they host Sunderland on the next Sky Sports Super Sunday?THE MEN FOR ALL COMPETITIONS
Hi Martin. Great stats! According to my knowledge the already fabulous Javier Hernandez has scored in all possible competitions this season - The PL, Carling Cup, FA Cup, Champions League and Charity Shield. Has anyone ever done that before? Nicolai Dissing (Manchester Utd fan) MARTIN SAYS: That's a great spot, Nicolai. Javier Hernandez has scored in all of the five competitions you mention: Community Shield v Chelsea
Champions League v Valencia, Marseille
Carling Cup v Wolves
FA Cup v Southampton
10 Premier League goals Given the fact relatively few players are able to score in the Community / Charity Shield I can find only ONE other player who has scored in the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup, Champions League and Charity Shield. You might be surprised to learn that that man is the much-maligned Chelsea forward Andrei Shevchenko. In 2006/07, Shevchenko had a scoring record as follows: Community Shield v Liverpool
Carling Cup v Aston Villa, Wycombe
Champions League v Levski Sofia, Valencia
FA Cup v Nottingham Forest, Norwich, Tottenham
Four Premier League goals I have found examples of two other players who have scored in the four domestic competitions AND in Europe during the Premier League era, although these include other European competitions rather than the Champions League. Firstly, Arsenal's Ian Wright in 1993/94: Charity Shield v Man Utd
League Cup v Norwich
FA Cup v Bolton
Cup Winners Cup v Odense, Standard Liege, Paris St Germain
23 Premier League goals And also Liverpool's Ian Rush in 1992/93: Charity Shield v Leeds
League Cup v Chesterfield
Cup Winners Cup v Apollon Limassol
FA Cup v Bolton
14 Premier League goals Finally, it's worth noting that in 1999/2000, Kanu scored in five competitions for Arsenal. He netted in the Charity Shield, Premier League, League Cup, Champions League and UEFA Cup (Arsenal dropped into the UEFA Cup after being knocked out of the Champions League), but he did not score in the FA Cup. However, nine of them can match the exploits of Barcelona forward Pedro, who scored in six official club competitions last year. He netted in the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup, the World Club Cup, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and La Liga.
RED RYAN
Hi Martin. I read somewhere that Ryan Giggs has never been sent off while playing a senior game in his entire career at Manchester United. Is it correct? How many players can boast of such a terrific record? Thanks and Regards, Prakhar Goel, Manchester United Fan, India MARTIN SAYS: That is correct. The Welshman has never been sent off in a senior game for United, although he has seen red in an international game for Wales. He was sent off for two bookable offences in the 86th minute of a World Cup qualifier against Norway on September 5, 2001. He was also retrospectively given a two-match international ban for elbowing Russian player Vadim Evseev during the first leg of a Euro 2004 play-offs in September 2003. The match referee did not spot the incident and he was punished using video evidence after the game. He was also fined for his role in the infamous 0-0 draw between Arsenal and Manchester United at Old Trafford in September 2003, but did not receive a ban. In terms of his Premier League record, nobody comes close to playing in so many games without receiving a red card, as you can see from the list below: Most Premier League appearances without receiving a red card: 1. Ryan Giggs (568)
2. Shay Given (406)
3. Aaron Hughes (391)
4. Nigel Martyn (372)
5. Luke Young (345)
6 Nick Barmby, Thomas Sorensen (343)
8. Steed Malbranque (329)
9. Kevin Campbell (325)
10. Damien Duff, Paul Telfer (318)
UNITED GREATS OF AMERICA
Dear Martin. I saw that Clint Dempsey scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season against Fulham. Can you tell me if that's a record for an American player? G Fallows (Fulham fan) MARTIN SAYS: It is indeed a record. Clint Dempsey has become the first player from the USA to score 10 goals in a Premier League season - and he's still got eight games to add to that tally. He now has 31 Premier League goals to his name and just needs five more to break the American record set by another former Fulham favourite, Brian McBride. He also got the record by scoring against an American international goalkeeper, Tim Howard. As you can see from the list below, McBride narrowly missed out on hitting double figures twice in the Premier League; he scored nine goals in both 2005/06 and 2006/07. I have outlined the most successful goalscoring seasons for American players in the Premier League and the list is dominated by Dempsey and McBride. But you'll notice the names of Roy Wegerle (who was born in South Africa, but played internationally for the USA), Joe-Max Moore and Carlos Bocanegra in there too. Most goals from an American player in a single Premier League season: TEN
Clint Dempsey (2010/11)
NINE
Brian McBride (2005/06)
Brian McBride (2006/07)
SEVEN
Clint Dempsey (2009/10)
SIX
Roy Wegerle (1993/94)
Joe-Max Moore (1999/00)
Brian McBride (2004/05)
Clint Dempsey (2008/09)
Clint Dempsey (2007/08)
FIVE
Carlos Bocanegra (2006/07)
FAMILIAR FOES
A Champions League related question for you, in the wake of the quarter final draw, Chelsea have drawn Man Utd. In recent years, we have had Liverpool-Chelsea, Liverpool-Arsenal, Arsenal-Chelsea, Arsenal-Man Utd and Chelsea-Man Utd in that final. My question is how do we compare to the other nations who have been paired with each other? I remember Real-Valencia in the final, and Juventus-Milan in the final. Andy H (Leeds Utd fan) MARTIN SAYS: Since the Champions League was launched in 1992, there have been 18 knock-out ties played between clubs of the same nation, including the forthcoming Man United v Chelsea clash. As a rule clubs from the same nation are kept apart in the group stage (although Liverpool did face Chelsea in 2005/06 because they'd been granted a special exemption by UEFA to qualify as the holders and did not receive national protection when the draw was made). Of the 18 knock-out games between clubs from the same country, nine have been all-English ties. This is way more than the three all Italian and all-Spanish clashes we've seen, the two all-German clashes and the one all-French tie between Lyon and Bordeaux last season. Spain will add to their tally if both Barcelona and Real Madrid win their quarter-finals because they will then face each other in this year's semis. Clubs from the same country playing each other in the knock-out stages of the Champions League: ENGLAND
Man Utd v Chelsea (2010/11 quarter-final)
Liverpool v Chelsea (2008/09 quarter-final)
Man Utd v Arsenal (2008/09 semi-final)
Arsenal v Liverpool (2007/08 quarter-final)
Liverpool v Chelsea (2007/08 semi-final)
Man Utd v Chelsea (2007/08 final)
Chelsea v Liverpool (2006/07 semi-final)
Chelsea v Liverpool (2004/05 semi-final)
Chelsea v Arsenal (2003/04 quarter-final) ITALY
AC Milan v Inter (2004/05 quarter-final)
AC Milan v Inter (2002/03 semi-final)
AC Milan v Juventus (2002/03 final) SPAIN
Barcelona v Real Madrid (2001/02 semi-final)
Valencia v Barcelona (1999/00 semi-final)
Valencia v Real Madrid (1999/00 final) GERMANY
Bayern Munich v Kaiserslautern (1998/99 quarter-final)
Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund (1997/98 quarter-final) FRANCE
Lyon v Bordeaux (2009/10 quarter-final)
FAMILIAR FOES... PART TWO
Hi Martin. Manchester United will be playing against Chelsea in quarter finals of Champions League. As we know these two teams were winner and runner up in EPL last season. I am wondering how many times before have the winner and runner up played against each other in Champions League knock-out stages? Ananda Sapkota (Manchester Utd fan) MARTIN SAYS: This will be the third time that the winner and the runner-up in a particular division have played each other the next season in the Champions League. The last occasion was memorably the 2008 final in Moscow when champions Manchester United beat the previous season's runners-up Chelsea on penalties. The only other time this has happened was back in 1998/99 when German champions Kaiserslautern were drawn to play the previous season's runners-up Bayern Munich. The aggregate score was 6-0 to Bayern, so that shows the champions don't necessarily always come out on top! Here is the list from above, repeated making it clear where each side had finished in their respective divisions the previous season: Premier League:
2010/11 quarter-final: Man Utd (2nd) v Chelsea (1st)
2008/09 quarter-final: Liverpool (4th) v Chelsea (2nd)
2008/09 semi-final: Man Utd (1st) v Arsenal (3rd)
2007/08 quarter-final: Arsenal (4th) v Liverpool (3rd)
2007/08 semi-final: Liverpool (3rd) v Chelsea (2nd)
2007/08 final: Man Utd (1st) v Chelsea (2nd)
2006/07 semi-final: Chelsea (1st) v Liverpool (3rd)
2004/05 semi-final: Chelsea (2nd) v Liverpool (4th)
2003/04 quarter-final: Chelsea (4th) v Arsenal (2nd) Serie A:
2004/05 quarter-final: AC Milan (1st) v Inter (4th)
2002/03 semi-final: AC Milan (4th) v Inter (3rd)
2002/03 final: AC Milan (4th) v Juventus (1st) La Liga:
2001/02 semi-final: Barcelona (4th) v Real Madrid (1st)
1999/00 semi-final: Valencia (4th) v Barcelona (1st)
1999/00 final: Valencia (4th) v Real Madrid (2nd) Bundesliga
1998/99 quarter-final: Bayern Munich (2nd) v Kaiserslautern (1st)
1997/98 quarter-final: Bayern Munich (1st) v Borussia Dortmund (3rd) Ligue 1:
2009/10 quarter-final: Lyon (3rd) v Bordeaux (1st)
LETTING THEM IN
Dear Martin. Somebody has pointed out to me that West Brom have only kept one clean sheet all season - and that was in the second game against Sunderland. Is this some sort of record? Gavin Cooper-Daniels. MARTIN SAYS: As you say, West Brom have gone 28 consecutive games without keeping a clean sheet and that is indeed an new Premier League record. They have now surpassed the total of 27 consecutive games without a clean sheet set by Burnley last season, who kept Hull out on October 31 and then failed to keep a clean sheet in the rest of the campaign. In theory, their tally could be extended if and when they return to the top flight. That Burnley team managed to keep three clean sheets last season and no team has ever gone a whole campaign with fewer than that (Derby and Birmingham in 2007/08 and Leeds in 2003/04 also went through a whole season with just three shutouts). So West Brom need three clean sheets from their final eight games to avoid joining that list or even breaking that record. Thanks to Opta, here are the longest streaks in Premier League history without keeping a clean sheet:
| Team | PL games without a clean sheet | Date of last game failed to keep clean sheet |
| West Brom | 28 | 19/03/11 |
| Burnley | 27 | 08/05/10 |
| Wimbledon | 26 | 30/10/99 |
| Newcastle | 25 | 21/04/01 |
| Swindon Town | 24 | 07/05/94 |
| West Ham | 24 | 08/11/08 |
| West Brom | 23 | 02/10/04 |
| Bolton | 22 | 20/01/10 |
| Newcastle | 21 | 11/09/99 |
| Norwich | 21 | 19/03/05 |
