Danny Drinkwater could have played his final game on loan at Barnsley, but Keith Hill hopes to agree a new deal for the Manchester United midfielder.
The 21-year-old suffered a torn thigh muscle during the first half of Saturday's 5-3 home defeat by Ipswich Town and is facing up to a month on the sidelines.
He has made 16 appearances in the Championship for the Tykes this season and his current loan arrangement is due to expire on 2nd January.
Tykes boss Hill is disappointed to have lost Drinkwater, but is planning to hold talks with United regarding a possible extension.
Hopeful
"Danny could be out for three to four weeks," Hill told the
Sheffield Star. "He's gone back to Manchester United for an MRI scan to see the extent of the damage.
"We're hoping he's going to be alright, but we won't know any more until we hear back about the scan. We're hopeful, but you never know with these things.
"Danny's injury is a blow for us because he's been excellent this season but his injury presents opportunities for other players.
"Danny wants to stay and play football, but again he's not our player so we'll be working closely with United to see if anything can be done."
