Barnsley youngster pens first professional contract

Barnsley midfielder Paul Digby has revealed his delight after signing his first professional contract with the South Yorkshire club. Digby, who is still an academy scholar, made his first-team debut in September's 1-1 draw with Derby when he was just 16 years old. The youngster was quick to pay tribute to the club's staff after signing a three -year deal that will keep him at Oakwell until the summer of 2014.

Thrilled

official website: "Obviously I was thrilled to be offered a contract. When I signed I was just over the moon. It's a massive day for myself and my family. I've worked towards it for a long time and I'm just thrilled. "I'd like to give a massive thanks to all the Academy staff. Without them I wouldn't be the player I am. Simon Brook, Steve Moffat, Bunny (Mark Burton) and Ronnie Branson have helped me a lot and the first team staff have also worked hard with me." Barnsley manager Keith Hill has been impressed with Digby and has handed him two starts in recent weeks, and the club's academy hope to produce more young talent following their recent success. General manager Don Rowling said: "It is always pleasing when you see one of the Academy scholars make the grade. We are committed to developing players in the Academy and we hope Paul will be one of many in the future."
